Partnering with Morgan Sindall to Support the University of Leeds Campus Improvement Programme

Supporting Inclusive Design at the University of Leeds

In association with Morgan Sindall, we’re proud to be delivering disability access and inclusion consultancy for the University of Leeds as part of their ambitious Campus Improvement Programme (CIP).

Our Role in the Campus Improvement Programme

GRD:EDI is providing disability access and inclusion advice on 16 projects across the University of Leeds estate.

These include a range of spaces—from WC upgrades and new entrances to learning, study and social zones—each with its own specific access and inclusion considerations.

Working to a demanding programme, we are providing:

·         RIBA Stage 2 and 4 design reviews, commentary and advice

·         Derogation workshops and justifications

·         Advice on fit-out and remedial works, along with final sign-off

An example of the benefits of the programme of works include:  Along the ‘Red Route (a vital step-free pedestrian highway from the north to south of the campus), a disused cafe is being converted into a student space; This includes a new workshop space, configured to be accessible for wheelchair users, with additional social and study spaces with easy access to adjoining refreshment facilities. Inclusive design has been integrated into the choice of colours and finishes as well as the layout and dimensions of the spaces and facilities provided to make this a welcoming and user-friendly space for all.

Working Alongside a Disability Confident Employer

Richie Dryden Projects Director at GRD:EDI, said:

“It’s a privilege to work alongside Morgan Sindall, a certified Disability Confident Employer that actively champions diversity and inclusion.”

This commitment is reflected in a statement from the team at Morgan Sindall:

“By cultivating a more diverse, inclusive environment, we want people to always have the opportunity to be their best, to feel supported, to know that their contribution is recognised, and that there are no barriers to achieving their potential.”

Designing for Inclusion: A Shared Commitment

Our work on the Campus Improvement Programme reflects a shared belief in the importance of inclusive, accessible environments for all users—whether students, staff, or visitors.

Looking Ahead

With 16 live projects and more to come, we’re committed to ensuring that access and inclusion are considered at every stage of design and delivery. We look forward to continuing our work with Morgan Sindall and the University of Leeds to help create a campus that works for everyone.
